The Machinist

Overview: The Machinist produces high-quality components by independently setting up, operating,
troubleshooting, and optimizing manufacturing equipment. The Machinist applies advanced technical
knowledge to meet production requirements, improve manufacturing processes, support fellow team
members, and help Ergoseal consistently meet customer expectations.

Purpose of the Role:  The Machinist is responsible for the independent setup and operation of CNC and other manufacturing
equipment, including complex and specialized machining processes. The Machinist ensures production
requirements are achieved through effective setup, accurate inspection, problem-solving, process
optimization, and adherence to Ergoseal quality and safety standards.

As experience and technical capability increase, the Machinist may serve as a technical resource, mentor
other employees, develop process standards, and lead continuous improvement efforts.

Key Responsibilities & Technical Expectations

• Read and interpret production drawings, BOMs, work orders, and manufacturing documentation independently.

• Set up and operate assigned CNC and other production equipment independently.

• Perform complete machine setups, including appropriate tooling, workholding, offsets, and machine adjustments.

• Obtain acceptable first pieces and complete required first-piece inspection and approval processes.

• Select appropriate tooling and workholding methods based on job requirements.

• Perform routine tool changes and make appropriate machine adjustments.

• Accurately use precision measuring equipment to verify product conformance.

• Conduct in-process inspections and maintain required production documentation.

• Optimize feeds, speeds, tooling, and cycle times as appropriate to improve productivity and quality.

• Diagnose and troubleshoot machine, tooling, material, and process issues.

• Identify causes of scrap, rework, and quality problems and implement appropriate corrective actions.

• Maintain consistent production quality and support established production and on-time requirements.

• Support equipment maintenance and measuring equipment calibration activities.

• Support welding, fabrication, assembly integration, and other manufacturing activities as required.

• Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas.

• Follow all Ergoseal BMS requirements and AS9100 quality management system procedures.

• Identify opportunities to improve processes, productivity, quality, and cost.

• Support the development and implementation of standard work and setup practices.

• Assist with training and development of Operators and less-experienced manufacturing employees.

• Support Production Management with technical information related to jobs, setups, production challenges, and process requirements.

Advanced Machinist Responsibilities

As technical capability and experience develop, the Machinist may take on additional responsibilities, including:

• Serving as a technical resource for Operators and other Machinists.

• Mentoring and training less-experienced employees.

• Leading troubleshooting efforts for complex production issues.

• Developing and improving setup standards and best practices.

• Participating in continuous improvement projects.

• Identifying productivity and cost-reduction opportunities.

• Supporting quoting and manufacturability discussions.

• Contributing to process development and standard work creation.

• Serving as a subject matter expert in an area of specialization.

Advanced Machinists are expected to demonstrate mastery in at least one area of specialization.

Qualifications

• High school diploma/equivalent preferred, or demonstrated ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.

• Demonstrated experience in CNC machining and manufacturing operations.

• Ability to independently read and interpret production drawings, BOMs, and work orders.

• Demonstrated ability to set up and operate CNC equipment.

• Experience using precision measuring equipment.

• Ability to perform first-piece inspection and make appropriate process adjustments.

• Experience with CNC turning and/or live tooling preferred.

• Experience with welding, fabrication, assembly, or related manufacturing processes preferred.

• Machining certification or technical training is a plus.

• Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot manufacturing and equipment issues.

• Ability to safely perform the physical requirements of the position, with reasonable accommodations as applicable.

Career Progression

The Machinist role encompasses increasing levels of technical expertise and responsibility. As an employee demonstrates greater independence, setup capability, technical knowledge, problem-solving ability, and leadership, responsibilities may progress from fully capable Machinist to advanced/master-level technical expertise.

The Machine Operator

Overview: The Machine Operator learns and applies manufacturing fundamentals, safety requirements, quality expectations, and basic machine operation to produce quality components that meet customer and production requirements. The Machine Operator works as part of the Ergoseal team, developing technical skills while following established processes and work instructions.

Purpose of the Role:  The Machine Operator supports manufacturing operations by safely operating production equipment, following documented procedures, maintaining quality standards, and developing the skills necessary to progress within the manufacturing organization.

Key Responsibilities & Technical Expectations

• Learn and follow all applicable safety, quality, and production requirements.

• Read and understand basic production drawings with assistance.
• Understand part identification, work orders, and applicable production documentation.
• Perform machine loading and unloading accurately and safely.
• Operate assigned production equipment according to documented work instructions.
• Learn basic CNC machine operation and manufacturing processes.
• Use basic measuring tools with assistance and learn proper measurement techniques.
• Learn and follow first-piece inspection procedures.
• Perform in-process quality checks as directed.
• Maintain accurate production documentation.
• Learn to identify common machine or process issues and appropriately escalate concerns.
• Participate in welding and fabrication activities as training and job responsibilities require.

Qualifications

• High school diploma/equivalent preferred, or demonstrated ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.

• Ability to learn and follow written and verbal work instructions.

• Ability to learn to read basic production drawings and manufacturing documentation.

• Previous manufacturing experience is helpful but not required.

• Willingness to learn CNC machining, welding/fabrication, assembly, and other manufacturing processes.

• Ability to use or learn basic measuring equipment.
• Ability to safely perform the physical requirements of the position, with reasonable

Career Progression

The Machine Operator role provides a foundation for progression into higher levels of manufacturing
responsibility. As technical skills, independence, machine knowledge, setup capability, problem-solving
ability, and quality performance develop, employees may progress toward Operator 1 and ultimately Machinist responsibilities.
